He was been the founder and Chairperson of the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur since it began in 2005. Fred harnessed local business and community support and appreciated the generosity of sponsors who make it possible for 100% of the money raised to go to patient care and comfort. Fred was immensely proud of the success of the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur and of the willingness of the wider Macarthur community to embrace this cause. Sadly Fred passed away in December 2016 after a short illness. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal posthumously for his community work.

I have called Macarthur home for the past 20 years. In that time, while I was working at a local publication I first witnessed the essence and spirit of local charities at work and at times assisted them in a small way. Then a few years later when I received my own cancer diagnosis and became a patient of the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Unit I was a recipient of the things that the 24 Hr Fight provides. I can say that was when Iwas truly educated. While we have a superior facility without question, we need so much more. Hence on my recovery I was determined to honour the people who facilitated my treatment and those fellow patients who are still in the battle as well as the ones to come. It is with great pride that I say I’ve become a member of the 24 Hr Fight Against Cancer and I look forward to many years of fundraising with this invaluable committee and community.

I have been a resident of Campbelltown/ Macarthur for over 50 years. Attending St Gregorys Campbelltown in my earlier years I developed a keen desire for team sports so much so that I continued playing soccer in the local area up until the age of 52. My wife and I raised 4 wonderful children in the Macarthur area and we are proud to call it home. My father, the late Fred Borg OAM was the founder of the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur and I share his passion for what the local community can achieve when they come together. I am extremely proud to be part of this wonderful committee to assist in raising the much needed funds for the ongoing treatment and support of the local Cancer patients and their families.

Although I no longer reside in the Macarthur region, my involvement with this charity commenced on about 10 years ago When I organised my work colleagues to join the 24 hour walk in October.  Since then I have taken part as a walker then a committee member. I support this charity because all the money raised stays in the Macarthur region to support the local community. I have been part of the committee for 6 years and happy to take up the position of Treasurer.

Joining the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Committee is something I’d been wanting to do for years. I am the granddaughter of Fred Borg, the a Founder of the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer, and a local man who fought cancer twice. So this charity and its purpose holds a significance to me that is engraved deep within my heart.
I have also been a Registered Nurse since 2016, and have worked with many Survivors and those going through the journey. I now lead health Promotion initiatives to promote awareness of Cancer Screening with the overall aim to increase screening rates throughout South Western Sydney, particularly with our local First Peoples. This is a passion of mine because early detection makes such a huge impact on treatment options and prognosis.
I cannot wait to do what I can to help make a difference through fundraising for Macarthur, the area which has been called home for 5 generations of family now with my children.

Nicole Hyde

I have been an active participant in the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer walk under the team Aiden’s Angels. Through the loss of my dad and son (aged 6) in 2015 both to cancer, I want to carry on Fred Borg legacy of ensuring that cancer services are adequately funded and supported for the Macarthur area. My family and I are personally grateful to the Paediatric Ambulatory Care unit (PAC’s) team and the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre at Campbelltown Hospital who supported my dad and son through their cancer treatment and in the final stages of their life. Without these local services and the equipment they provide families like mine need to travel out of area for treatment. I hope through the fundraising efforts we can continue to keep families together and these services local into the future.

I have lived in the Macarthur area for over 40 years with my husband Ted and our 2 children Adam and Jodi. We are both volunteers with Camden Meals on Wheels delivering meals to the elderly and have been for a number of years.

I decided to join this committee to assist in some way to support the effort to provide funds in the fight against Cancer. We have been very impressed by the substantial amounts raised over the years and the fact that it is helping our local community.

Fiona McKinnon

I am a proud resident of the Macarthur region. I grew up here, attended school locally, and have spent the majority of my working life in the Campbelltown Local Government Area. Motivated by the deep community spirit and collective strength of our region, my commitment to Macarthur runs deep. I’ve been actively volunteering in a variety of roles since childhood, contributing to many causes and community initiatives. There’s something truly special about the way our community comes together to support one another.
The 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur is an incredible charity that reflects the spirit of our local area. The atmosphere at the main event is both uplifting and emotional—a true reflection of the heart of Macarthur—as people from all walks of life come together for a powerful and inspiring cause. I am a committee member, a Team Captain, and a proud Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Ingleburn, proud sponsors of the walk.
